Spring has Sprung!

Spring officially started this week and the weather has us ready to head outdoors. If you are in need of some outdoor activity inspiration, here are some books to get you started:

i love dirt! 52 activities to help you and your kids discover the wonders of nature by Jennifer Ward

This book presents 52 open-ended activities to help you engage your child in the outdoors. No matter what your location—from a small patch of green in the city to the wide-open meadows of the country—each activity is meant to promote exploration, stimulate imagination, and heighten a child's sense of wonder.

The Bumper Book of Nature: A User's Guide to the Great Outdoors by Stephen Moss

When was the last time you climbed a tree? Picked blackberries? Held a snail race? Made maple syrup candy, an old-fashioned quill pen from a bird feather you found, or a plaster cast of an animal track?  If the answer is "can't remember" or quite possibly "never," The Bumper Book of Nature will inspire you to get outdoors and enjoy the very best kind of free entertainment for you and your family.

Sugar Snaps & Strawberries: Simple Solutions for Creating Your Own Small-Space Edible Garden by Andrea Bellamy

Imagine savoring fresh-picked strawberries on a weekend morning, plucking plump figs from your mini-orchard to quarter and serve at a farm-to-table meal with friends, or harvesting and sautéing the edible stalks of garlic bulbs. If the size of your space is bringing you back to reality, here’s the best part: you don’t need a big backyard to grow your own food. In fact, you don’t need a yard at all.

Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall

Isolated by Mexico's deadly Copper Canyons, the blissful Tarahumara Indians have honed the ability to run hundreds of miles without rest or injury. In a riveting narrative, award-winning journalist and often-injured runner Christopher McDougall sets out to discover their secrets. In the process, he takes his readers from science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultra-runners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to a climactic race in the Copper Canyons that pits America’s best ultra-runners against the tribe. McDougall’s incredible story will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that you, indeed all of us, were born to run.

First Line Friday

KIDS BOOK:
"I only invented Zombie Tag three weeks ago, and we've already lost seven spatulas." - Zombie Tag by Hannah Moskowitz

In the months since Wil Lowenstein's older brother Graham died, Wil has spent most of his time playing a game he invented but when he finds a way to bring Graham and others back from the dead, fighting zombies is suddenly no longer a game.

TEEN BOOK
:
"We were the last seven kids waiting around to get picked up from Tattawa Regional High School." - Trapped by Michael Northrop

Seven high school students are stranded at their New England high school during a week-long blizzard that shuts down the power and heat, freezes the pipes, and leaves them wondering if they will survive.

ADULT BOOK:
"Mr. and Mrs. Fang called it art. Their children called it mischief." - The Family Fang: A Novel by Kevin Wilson

Performance artists Caleb and Camille Fang dedicated themselves to making great art. But when an artist’s work lies in subverting normality, it can be difficult to raise well-adjusted children. Just ask Buster and Annie Fang. For as long as they can remember, they starred (unwillingly) in their parents’ madcap pieces. But now that they are grown up, the chaos of their childhood has made it difficult to cope with life outside the fishbowl of their parents’ strange world.

Last Week in Review - Kid's Programs!

It was a fun week for kids at the Pinelands Library!

On Monday night, we kicked off the week with Family Movie Night. It was our biggest turnout yet! Everyone got juice and popcorn and laughed all night at this month's feature, 'Puss in Boots'. The library felt just like a real movie theater!

On Wednesday, the kids got crafty and made personalized signs. Some kids chose to do a name sign while others chose to express an interest of theirs. Check out the creativity!

SKATE!

MALENA!

NORA ROCKS!

On Thursday, we got a visit from the Reading Magician. He came to the library to help us celebrate Read Across America with a special Dr. Seuss Magic Show!

Magic at the library!

On Friday, our littlest library goers enjoyed a Mother Goose on the Loose storytime. We had lots of fun bouncing, singing, crawling, and listening to stories!

And then on Saturday, we ended the week with our first ever Lego Club program! The building theme was "Out at Sea" and you won't believe how creative the results were! The kids built everything from pirate ships to entire beach-scapes. We also had fun listening to the Kidz Bop station on Pandora radio... so much fun that a few mini dance parties broke out between building sessions. We even had a break dancer in the crowd! Who knew that Legos and dancing went so well together?!

The builders got right to work.
